HAPPY HIDRELLEZ

You’ve timed this perfectly—since today is May 5th, we are officially on the eve of one of the most vibrant and ancient celebrations in the Balkans and Anatolia.
Hıdrellez marks the arrival of spring and the awakening of nature. According to tradition, it is the day when Hızır (the protector of land and helper of those in need) and İlyas (the protector of the seas) meet on Earth.
If you’re looking to get into the spirit of the holiday, here is a quick guide to the traditions happening right now:
1. The Rituals of Luck and Abundance
Tonight is the night most people perform their "magic." Here’s what’s usually on the agenda:
The Rose Tree Ritual: People draw their wishes (a house, a car, a wedding ring, a plane ticket) on a piece of paper or shape them out of stones/clay under a rose tree. It’s believed Hızır visits these spots to grant the wishes.
The Jar of Fortune (Kısmet Açma): In many villages, items like rings or earrings are placed in a jar of water. Tomorrow, someone will pull them out while reciting verses to predict the future.
Burying Money: Some bury coins at the foot of a rose tree to ensure financial abundance for the coming year.
2. Fire and Water
Jumping Over Fire: This is the most iconic image of Hıdrellez. Jumping over a small bonfire three times is said to ward off sickness and "burn away" the misfortunes of the previous year.
Washing with Morning Dew: Tomorrow morning (May 6), it’s tradition to wash your face with fresh spring water or even walk barefoot on the dewy grass to stay healthy.
3. Food and Nature
Eating fresh lamb or medicinal herbs gathered from the fields is a big part of the feast. It represents the "freshness" and vitality of the new season.
Are you planning to make a wish tonight?
If you have a rose tree nearby, you're halfway there! Just remember to draw clearly—Hızır is a busy guy tonight and appreciates a specific blueprint.
